Asterfusion releases 12.8T P4 Programmable Switch by Intel Tofino 2

There has been extensive discourse surrounding programmability in the data center, enabling IT managers to have more comprehensive control over their data center switches and other network components. With the ever-growing prevalence of cloud applications and services, as well as the increasing use of video in various applications, the volume of data being processed is monumental. Consequently, data centers serve as the foundation for all this data traffic. Operators are now seeking programmable switches that offer greater flexibility in managing the data center compared to conventional fixed-function switches. Programmable switch ASICs not only allow for customizing the switch's behavior but also enable scalability to harness the unique characteristics of the data center.

Merits of P4 Programmable Switch

By availing complete customization without significant sacrifices in performance, increased power consumption, or added costs, programmable switch ASICs ensure efficient packet pipelines. Furthermore, users can tailor the behavior of the physical switch to meet their specific requirements. Programmable switches not only facilitate the creation of scalable infrastructure services but also allow for the realization of automation benefits. Meanwhile, carriers aspire to low latency, high throughput, and cost-effectiveness as favorable outcomes.

Asterfusion X732P-T 32* 400G P4 Programmable Switch based on Intel Tofino 2

Asterfusion has released the X732P-T, a 12.8 Tb/s P4-programmable open network switch that is based on the Intel Tofino 2 chipset. This switch offers full programmable switching capability, allowing network architects to replace traditional fixed-function switches with P4-programmable switches, resulting in a throughput of up to 12.8 Tb/s. To enhance reliability and capability, the switch is equipped with six redundant, hot swappable fan modules and two AC power supplies. This enables the X732P-T to effectively support hyperscale, cloud, and service provider environments with higher bandwidth.

Moreover, the X732P-T is fully compatible with the SONiC open source network software and supports Asterfusion's enterprise distribution of SONiC, known as AsterNOS. Asterfusion provides reliable and tested SONiC-based solutions that are specifically designed for their full series of open networking platforms. Each release of AsterNOS is based on the Community SONiC release and includes fixes, enhancements, and additional features to ensure that customers can confidently deploy a robust and supported branch.

Performance:

The Intel® Tofino™ 2 Intelligent Fabric Processor doubles its switching capacity compared to the first generation while providing a greater number of packet processing resources to handle demanding workloads in distributed applications, virtual machine scaling, artificial intelligence, and serverless deployments.

Taking into account both high performance and cost-effectiveness:
• It features 32x 400GbE QSFP-DD ports in a 1 RU form factor for high-density applications, and it can support up to 258x 25/10G SFP28 ports via break-out cables.
• The processor offers full P4 programmability and supports large table sizes for routing, tunnels, and access control lists (ACLs).
• With a 12.8T Intel Tofino BFN-T20-128Q featuring quad pipelines and 20 MAU stages, it delivers enhanced match-action unit pipelines and a traffic manager that enables precise control over packets.
• It can handle up to 6 billion packets per second.

In conclusion, Asterfusion has launched the Asterfusion 32* 400G Programmable X732P-T Switch, which is based on the Intel Tofino 2 chipset. This switch offers impressive programmable switching ability and supports high-speed throughput. With its enhanced reliability and compatibility with SONiC-based solutions, the X732P-T is an ideal choice for hyperscale, cloud, and service provider environments.
