Asterfusion release its own OpenWiFi compatible controller

What is OpenWiFi and Why we need it?

OpenWiFi, a classified Wi-Fi software system developed by the community, is now available as an open source solution. It features a cloud controller SDK and enterprise-grade access point firmware that have been meticulously validated to ensure seamless performance. By adopting OpenWiFi, businesses can significantly reduce the cost of developing and operating Wi-Fi networks, while also fostering innovation. Traditionally, service providers and OEMs would need to build a Wi-Fi stack from scratch for specific hardware. However, OpenWiFi simplifies this process by offering an open implementation of the stack, along with certified hardware to run it. Furthermore, OpenWiFi provides open APIs that enable cloud-based device management.

Launched in 2021, OpenWiFi is an initiative of the Open Converged Wireless (OCW) software project group within the Telecommunications Infrastructure Project (TIP). It evolved from previous TIP initiatives, such as OpenRAN, Open Optical, and Packet Transport (OOPT).

Considering the ever-increasing number of Wi-Fi devices, which is projected to exceed 16 billion, the popularity of Wi-Fi is expected to continue growing. The potential clearance of the 6 GHz band for unlicensed use further drives this growth. It's worth noting that Wi-Fi complements 5G networks. In this regard, OpenWiFi has generated significant interest within the industry.

Asterfusion joined the Telecommunications Infrastructure Project (TIP) Open Converged Wireless (OCW) project team in April 2023 and has built our TIP-based OpenWiFi Controller that can easily and effectively managed our SONiC NOS-based layer2/3 switches .
